Guwahati: A man hailing from Hajo in Assam's Kamrup district was arrested by police on Thursday night for allegedly threatening to murder Assam's health, finance, and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

As per reports, Aktar Ali had made a death threat against Sarma on the social media platform Facebook, on the basis of which he was put behind bars by police.

After an FIR was lodged against Ali, the youth went into hiding. However, a search operation was launched by the local police and he was finally arrested.

Ali is now being interrogated, and further investigations into the case are on, said police.

An FIR against Ali has been filed at the Hajo Police Station after his death threat against the minister Sarma went viral. Subsequently, the presidents of the BJP units in Uttar Hajo and Hajo Mandal filed the FIR against the Hajo youth. The BJP workers of the area are now demanding stringent action against the accused.

This development has occured in the lead-up to the upcoming 2021 polls in Assam, which will see the saffron party attempt to retain its biggest stronghold in the Northeast.

The Indian National Congress (INC), Badruddin Ajmal-led All Assam United Democratic Front (AIUDF), and the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) are expected to be the biggest challengers.
