JAMUGURIHAT: Harilal Chiruwal, a very talented grade IV employee of the 12th Assam Police Force, has been making waves with his exceptional artistic talent. Hailing from Chamardalani village near Jamugurihat, this visionary sculptor has been creating wonders with pieces of wood during his work breaks.

Harilal's passion for engraving sculptures on wood using a chisel started at a very young age. Recently, he has captivated the attention of art enthusiasts by crafting intricate and captivating wooden sculptures. His repertoire includes the stunning depiction of the story of Graha Gajendra, the sculpture symbol of Jai Aai Assam, Lord Vishnu’s eternal decoration, the Chaturbhuja Brahma, the goddess Durga, the Goddess Saraswati, Shrimad Bhagawad Gita and among others.

One of the highlights of Harilal's creations is the representation of Assam's national treasures, such as statues of Lachit Barphukan with his sword in his hand along with living room decorable like national wealth of Assam- One-horned Rhino, Bhuwa-Bihuwoti under a Peepul Tree, various birds, and machete of Gorkha folk culture, ornaments as well as other intricately carved items.

The artist has skillfully etched the essence of national pride with vivid portrayals of the Ashoka Pillar, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhupen Hazarika, and Shrimanta Shankardev along with various renowned personalities carved in the pieces of wood as their lively reflection.

The wood-carved masterpieces by Harilal are exhibited and have garnered widespread appreciation and recognition in various parts of the country including the Barechaharia Bhaona of Jamugurihat, the Assam Sahitya Sabha’s Hojai session and even as far as Odisha’s Cuttack./

Despite his remarkable talent and contributions to the world of art, Harilal's local community has appealed to the Assam government for the provision of an artist pension. Such recognition, they believe, will honour the dedication and creativity of this gifted sculptor from Chamardalani. Harilal Chiruwal hopes to inspire the next generation of artists with his innovative creations and urges for support to continue pursuing his artistic endeavours. His artistic journey spans nearly 35 years, during which he has remained steadfast in his commitment to preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of Assam through his exquisite wooden sculptures.
