BOKAKHAT: Continuous and relentless rainfall over the past two days has severely affected the state, with Bokakhat among the worst-hit areas. Floodwaters have inundated large parts of the region, including sections of National Highway 37.
Near Latabari in Bokakhat, water is flowing across the highway as the Difolu River has overflowed, creating a critical flood situation. In several areas, the floodwaters have already begun eroding the tarred surface of the highway.
Heavy rainfall has led to water entering homes in various parts of Bokakhat, and numerous large trees have been uprooted. In Kolakhowa village, floodwaters surged into homes during the night, catching residents off guard.
Multiple stretches of National Highway 37 have been submerged, severely affecting vehicular movement, especially at night. If the water level continues to rise, the highway—the only major communication link between Upper and Lower Assam—may soon be completely cut off. The electricity supply has also been disrupted. The flooding caused by the Difolu River has turned the situation into a nightmare for local residents.
In Kolakhowa, under the jurisdiction of the South Kaziranga Gaon Panchayat, the situation deteriorated rapidly overnight. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) had to be deployed for urgent rescue operations.
All household belongings in the affected areas are now submerged. Around 175 families have taken shelter at Kolakhowa Primary School, which has officially been converted into a relief camp. During a site visit, it was observed that medical services are being provided to the affected residents at the shelter.
The flood-affected families have suffered extensive losses, including stored paddy and livestock such as ducks and chickens.
