Assam: High Court Orders Resettlement Of 100 Evicted Families

GUWAHATI : A petition has been filed by Debabrata Saikia, Assam's leader of Opposition regarding the resettlement of 100 families who got evicted in a drive.

Following the petition, Guwahati High Court has took a significant decision and directed the state administration to initiate the process of resettlement of families who got evicted from Dhalpur's Gorukhuti.

The eviction had occurred in 2021, and unfortunately, two people lost their lives as the process took a violent turn. It may be noted that Assam government carried out the mass eviction drive on the basis of illegal encroachers in Gorukhuti.

The individuals died during a police firing in the area. The court announced that, 100 families who are left for settlement has to submit individual applications to the Deputy Commissioner of Darrang district.

Furthermore, the evicted ones has to provide valid documents which could be used as consideration for their claim for alternative land for rehabilitation.

The Deputy Commissioner shall then pass individual orders within a six months time period, starting from the date of receipt of such application, the court added.

The DC shall also give the evicted individuals a chance to validate their points and allow to submit relevant materials for the process of resettlement. A total of 700 families got evicted in the area, out of which 600 families has already been resettled.

The court stated, as 600 have already been rehabilitated, court officials considers that no further thought is needed regarding the PIL filed by Debabrata Saikia. As per the reports, on 20th and 23rd of September, 2021, almost 1200 to 1400 houses were destroyed in Darpur I, II and III villages of Assam's Gorukhuti region.

Approximately, 7000 people went homeless in the process. The locals restricted the actions in a stern manner, as a result of which police had to resort to firing. Two people died in the event, and more than 20 people were severely injured. A policeman was also wounded during the eviction process of 2021.
