Assam: Himanta Biswa Sarma lauds health workers for initiative to donate plasma

Guwahati: Assam finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today stated thanked the Assam healthcare workers who came forward to donate blood plasma after recovering from the novel coronavirus.

"Today is a proud moment for us. I do not think we have ever had such a proud day in the history of mankind" the minister said, adding, "I believe the people connected to the health services – from paramedical, to lab technicians, to the ambulance drivers, to the cooks in colleges, to the specialist doctors in private hospitals – we have written a new history with our service."

Assam's health workers, who have been the backbone in our fight against COVID-19, are donating their plasma at a Plasma Donation Camp at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) today in a grand ceremony.

It needs mention here that a large number of Assam healthcare workers have decided to donate their plasma after recovering from the contagious disease.

"A large number of healthcare workers who got infected by #coronavirus have decided to donate their plasma after getting cured. A grand event is being organized on Monday, August 10 to felicitate them. Reviewed preparations for the same", Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet yesterday, informing about the development.

The plasma chapter in Assam's fight against the virus was kickstarted with the inauguration of the state's first plasma facility at the GMCH.

Notably, a doctor, Lithikesh, became the first plasma donor in the state. "My gratitude to Dr Lithikesh for donating his plasma, and to the team who is working on this bank. I encourage cured patients to come forward and donate", Sarma wrote on Twitter, announcing the landmark achievement.

Since then, several volunteers have donated their plasma in the state and many of them have been lauded by the health minister, who frequently posts about plasma donors on Twitter, and salutes them for their fight against the Wuhan-originating virus.
