Assam: History & Geography Made Compulsory From Class 8 Starting Next Academic Session

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has decided to make both history and geography subjects compulsory for schools from the next academic session.

Addressing a press meet on the book launch of 'Moran Janagosthir Buranji', a book on the history of Moran people, an ethnic group in the state, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that from the upcoming academic session, history and geography will be made compulsory in schools from class eight.

Speaking at the event, CM Sarma said, "On the auspicious occasion amid celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, I bring to the people this book titled 'Moran Janagosthir Buranji'."

He said, "The book contains all available information on the Moran people. They have close ties to the Kirati people, a Sino-Tibetan ethnic group. They were also a part of the history of the formation of Assam and Assamese people."

The CM also announced that his government will work towards creating an environment for study and discussions on history in Assam.

On the other hand, the Secondary Examination Board, Assam (SEBA) made an important announcement on August 10 about the Secondary School Leaving Examination (HSLC) and this decision falls in line with the new Education Policy (NEP).

As per reports, the question paper for the HSLC examination will be revised. The question paper of 100 marks will now comprise objective questions having a weightage of 45 marks, spread across four subjects.

English, General Science, General Maths and Social Science will be the four subjects.

It will come into effect from the upcoming 2023 HSLC examination.

SEBA has also informed that the first 50% of questions (i.e. 45 questions) will contain objective-type questions (very short question – 01mark each).

As far as the remaining 50% is concerned, there will be a mixture of two or three marks each for the rest 45 marks questions along with an internal assessment of 10 marks.
