Assam : Hojai Protests Against Merger With Nagaon, Burns Effigy Of CM

GUWAHATI : Assam Cabinet's decision to merge four districts - Tamulpur, Bajali, Hojai and Biswanath has erupted in agitation among the general public.

On Monday, a protest was staged in Hojai district by the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU). The union body demonstrated against the state government's decision to unify the district with Nagaon.

AAMSU followers raised slogans against CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and his government in nine areas across Hojai. They are of the view that after continuous efforts put by the people, Hojai got its identity as a sub-division in the year 1983.

Finally in 2016, it became a district. Now that the demand of the residents of Hojai has been fulfilled, the government wants to snatch away their identity. The protesters went all furious and tried to burn down an effigy of the CM.

However, the situation was taken into control by a team of police and the protesters were dispersed. Opposition congress party with other political party in collaboration with several organisations has raised voice against this merger decision.

The chief advisor of AASU, Samujjal Kumar has demanded the Assam Cabinet to withdraw the decision. He stated that, in no way the re- merging is acceptable.

Bhupen Bora, the Congress state president claimed that the administration took the decision without any sort of consent from the people belonging to these four districts.

This only portrays how much of an authoritarian character the CM holds, added Bora. The merger will create a real complicated atmosphere. The people hailing from the mentioned district are getting insecure regarding their self esteem and self respect.

On the other hand, Pabitra Margherita, the spokesman and BJP MP asserted that, government has always taken decision in a view to develop the state as a whole. The state administration had announced about the merger decision on 31st of December 2022.

The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi.
