GUWAHATI: In a shocking fraud incident in Assam's Lanka, a restaurant owner was defrauded of Rupees 6000 by a cyber-criminal.

An unknown person ordered food items from a hotel in Lanka and on doing the payment using the QR code of the UPI-based app he siphoned off the money.

The victim has been identified as Tipon Mazumdar, a resident of Lanka which is in the Hojai district of Assam.

The fraudster had ordered 20 plates of non-veg thali from the restaurant and asked the owner for a UPI-based app for the payment.

During the online transaction, the unknown person took away at least Rupees 6000 by sending a QR code which was already scanned by him.

On Friday 22 April, Tipon had lodged an FIR against the unidentified person at the Lanka Police Station in Hojai.

While speaking to the media persons about the incident, Tipon said that he had received a phone call from an unknown number and on receiving the call, a man introduced himself as an army Jawan.

Tipon further informed that the man ordered non-veg thali plates worth Rupees 6000 and while making the payment he asked whether the hotel owner uses a UPI-based app.

When Tipon replied that he had such an app for money transactions, the fraudster sent a QR code of one rupee from his phone number and Tipon to scan it.

The hotel owner according scanned the code to get his money for the delivery that the man ordered but he ended up losing his own money.

Later, Tipon found that an amount of Rupees 6000 was transferred from his bank account.

Meanwhile, the victim has been seeking help and action from the Assam government and police department in this regard.

He further claimed that such UPI-based mobile applications such as Google Pay and Phone Pe need to be banned because several fraud incidents are reported these days for UPI payments.
