DARRANG: In a worrisome turn of events for education in Assam's Darrang district, only 5 students out of 36 from Konaktapara Higher Secondary School at Dalgon passed the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exam this year. The disappointing result has caused widespread outrage among residents, who protested outside the school, demanding prompt action and responsibility.
Situated within the Dalgaon-Sialmari education block, the school has faced intense scrutiny, particularly given its faculty of 19 teachers. Protesters have complained about a perceived collapse of academic discipline and teaching standards, citing the school's shocking deterioration from a past record of churning out A-grade students to its present state of academic failure.
Headmaster Asadullah Faruqi and School Management Committee President Abdul Salam have faced criticism on grounds of negligence. The locals accused that school atmosphere has worsened considerably, with reports of students playing games on mobile phones during classes and being granted Wi-Fi connectivity by teachers. Moreover, repeated music and entertainment sessions have allegedly disturbed the learning environment.
Protesters have called for the resignation of the headmaster and SMC president, requesting them to accept moral responsibility for the collapse of the school. They have also requested the intervention of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Ranoj Pegu to enhance the academic standards of the school.
The authorities of the school have accepted the failure and apologized, emphasizing the need for introspection and corrective action. But this apology has not assuaged the anger of the community.
