Assam Human Rights Commission Issued Notice to Darrang DM over ‘Atrocities’ on Women

GUWAHATI: A single bench of N.K. Bora, Member, Assam Human Rights Commission issued notice to the District Magistrate, Darrang to cause a thorough enquiry into the said bizarre incident of police brutality on 3 women in the Burha Police Outpost, in Darrang district. The report is to be submitted, along with all medical papers/ documents, within 1 month from the receipt of the notice, stated a press release.

The Commission took suo motu cognizance of the case based on the newspaper reports published on September 18 whereby it was reported about the brutality on these 3 women who were allegedly picked up by Darrang police from Guwahati and taken to Burha Police Outpost where they were stripped and tortured by the inspector-in-charge, Mahendra Sarma and a lady constable Binita Boro of the same outpost. The women included a physically challenged lady and a pregnant woman who told before the media that the pregnant woman had to terminate her pregnancy after she was beaten up by the police. The incident took place on September 9 when a case was registered against Ruful Ali, brother of these three women. Unable to locate Ruful Ali, the police picked up these three women and taken to the Burha Police Station. Md. Makbul Hussain, President I/c of All Assam Garia Yuva Chatra Parishad also filed a complaint on the same incident.
