DHEMAJI: Ranjit Rath, the Chairman and Managing Director of Oil India Limited (OIL), has announced the discovery of hydrocarbons in the Kobu Chapori area of Assam's Dhemaji district. This discovery, made after thorough surveys and geological studies, confirms that crude oil is present under the Jonai region.

Kobu Chapori, a river island in Dhemaji, holds significant ecological importance as it acts as a vital link between the Poba Reserve Forest and the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. The newfound hydrocarbon reserves bring with them both economic potential and environmental considerations due to the sensitivity of the region.

Hydrocarbons, which are made of hydrogen and carbon, are found in crude oil, natural gas, and coal. While this discovery could benefit the energy industry, it also shows the importance of doing thorough environmental checks to ensure that extracting these resources doesn’t damage the region’s ecosystem.

Meanwhile, India as a whole produced 88,223 thousand metric tonnes (TMT) of crude oil in the past three financial years. Of this, Assam produced 12,518 TMT, which was ranked in third place among all states in the country, barring offshore crude oil production.

The figures for crude oil production were provided in a report by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Of the total 12,518 TMT production of crude oil in Assam, the state produced 3,991 TMT in the financial year of 2021-22, 4,166 TMT in 2022-23, and 4,361 TMT of crude oil in 2023-24 (provisional). From the figures mentioned above, it was clear that an increasing trend could be discerned in the crude oil production in Assam over the past three financial years.

It should be mentioned here that the state received a considerable amount as royalty for the crude oil produced in the state. Oil India Limited (OIL) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) were the two public sector entities engaged in the extraction of crude oil in the state.
