JAMUGURIHAT: A recent operation undertaken by Jamugurihat police led to the capture of suspected smugglers of cattle and rescued cattle from a vehicle.

The incident took place in the Chokighat locality of Jamugurihat region of the Sonitpur district of the state. During an operation carried out early in the morning, the Jamugurihat police team was able to stop a vehicle bearing registration number AS 32 C 2387. After the apprehension, the police are taking the necessary steps against them as per the law, The Tata Bolero Pickup bearing registration number AS 32 C 2387 was also seized by the authorities.

Previously, an operation along the international border in Meghalaya, the Border Security Force (BSF) successfully thwarted a cross-border smuggling attempt, rescuing 37 cattle heads destined for Bangladesh. The operation was initiated based on intelligence inputs signalling a potential smuggling bid. According to reliable sources, BSF troops, acting on the received information, launched a targeted operation in a dense jungle area along the Jowai route. This route has become increasingly favoured by cattle smugglers due to its proximity to dense forest cover, providing a convenient cover for their illegal activities.

The team, diligently searching the forested region, discovered a group of smugglers in the act of transporting numerous bovines across the border. Upon being confronted by the BSF troops, the alleged smugglers hastily fled the scene, leaving behind the cattle. The successful operation resulted in the rescue of nearly 37 cattle heads, preventing their illicit transportation to Bangladesh. The rescue highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in curbing cross-border smuggling activities, particularly in regions with favourable terrain for such operations.
