GUWAHATI: Keeping in line with the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations commemorating 75 years of India's independence, Indian Army's Eastern Command Headquarters held a two-day mega event in the city which ended on Monday.

The finale of the mega event themed on Celebrating the Contribution of India's Northeast Region in Nation Building, was organised at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Sarusajai here. The event was a widely attended one with participants from all the Northeastern states.

Among the events on Monday, there was a special weapon and equipment display, adventure activities display by the Armed Forces, a fusion band concert, a cultural medley representing the NE Region. There were also performances by popular singers Zubeen Garg, Priyanka Bharali and Tetseo Sisters besides a musical theatrical performance.

But above all, the drone show, also the first one in Guwahati city turned out to be a favourite one for the audience.

The event on Monday was also attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu. Addressing the gathering both CM Sarma and CM Khandu lauded the Indian Army for the great two-day extravaganza that highlighted the contribution of the people of NE Region in the country's progress.

Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh delivered the keynote address at the event virtually. Singh in his speech stressed on the major role played by people from the Northeastern Region in building the nation over the years. The Defence Minister also highlighted the transformational development taking place in the NE states which he opined will propel India towards progress.

Meanwhile, on the first day of the two-day mega event, a Veer Nari Felicitation Ceremony was also held at the Narangi Military Station. It may be mentioned here that a veer nari is a widow of an armed force martyr who has laid down his life for the nation.

Besides honouring the brave hearts, the ceremony was a gesture from the Indian Army to reinforce its commitment towards providing quality healthcare, dignity, and problem-resolution to Veer Naris of the soldiers. It was also to deliver the message that force is sensitive to their needs, and their families are cared for.
