Assam: International Women’s Day celebrated at Sootea

JAMUGURIHAT: Like other parts of the world, the International Women’s Day was observed at Sootea today with pomp and grandeur. The day-long programme convened by Brihattar Sootea Nari Mancha in association with the All India Radio, Tezpur was held at Sootea Natya Bhawan with Sewali Barua, President of Brihattar Sootea Nari Mancha, in the chair.

The programme began with the illumination of ceremonial lamps by Bidyut Prabha Barua while Purabi Hazarika, Secretary of Brihattar Sootea Nari Mancha, explained the objectives. Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika graced the occasion as chief guest. Addressing the open session, MLA Hazarika spoke about the role of women in society and their invaluable contribution in strengthening a stable society. He briefly described various women welfare schemes undertaken by the union as well as the state governments. Marami Bhattacharya, retired professor of Biswanath College, attended the session as an appointed speaker who spoke on the occasion and significance of International Women’s Day.
