BONGAIGAON: The police have arrested an interstate gang from Uttar Pradesh involved in stealing valuable equipment from mobile towers across Assam. The gang, operating with the assistance of local youth, was caught red-handed in the Baitamari area of Assam's Bongaigaon district.
Reports suggest that the gang was involved in multiple thefts across Assam, targeting mobile towers to steal batteries and other equipment. Three members of the gang identified as Shakir Khan, Nabed, and Mainur Ali, were arrested while attempting to steal a Radio Remote Unit (RRU) from a mobile tower in Nisha Kayethpara.
The police also seized a vehicle bearing registration number AS 01BM 6454, which the gang used for their operations. This incident is not isolated, as two other RRUs were stolen from mobile towers in the same area a few months ago.
A thorough investigation is currently underway.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, in Aohata, Baksa district of Assam, alert locals thwarted a bold attempt to steal equipment from a mobile tower.
Two individuals, Mofidul Islam and Asadul Ali from Khorishalar, Barpeta, were apprehended while descending from the tower, situated at Ranjit Kalita's residence.
The duo, believed to have been involved in similar thefts at other mobile tower sites, were confronted by an enraged mob as they descended. The angry locals physically assaulted the thieves before law enforcement arrived at the scene.
