GUWAHATI: A griming event tarnished the celebratory mood of the Assamese New Year in Duliajan, Assam, when an unknown set of miscreants attacked the residence of a journalist employed with an independent news channel.

According to reports, the attack was reportedly made on Tuesday night when some unknown assailants reportedly pelted stones at the home of journalist Brajen Gogoi, badly damaging the house. The incident raised grave issues concerning the freedom and security of the press in the area.

Gogoi, who had just filed a report on a tense standoff at the Naoholia Police Outpost earlier the same day, suspects that the attack could have been a direct response to his reporting.

In a tearful exchange with the media, he was visibly shaken, suggesting a possible link between his reporting and the attack on his residence.

After the attack, top police officers immediately visited the scene and have initiated an inquiry into the incident. But no suspects have been arrested so far.

The media fraternity in Duliajan condemned the incident severely, labeling it an assault on freedom of the press.
