KHERONI: A massive gathering witnessed the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Dr Tuliram Ronghang’s Public Interaction Programme yesterday, held under the 9th Number Amreng MAC constituency at Arnam Teplong village. The event marked a significant moment for the local community as Dr Ronghang pledged a series of developmental initiatives aimed at uplifting the region.

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Dr Ronghang assured the people of Arnam Teplong that the KAAC would prioritize the construction of new roads, schools building, and healthcare facilities, alongside other essential infrastructure projects. He emphasized the council’s commitment to providing safe drinking water, establishing a Rongker Than (a traditional Karbi worship site), and supplying free books to recognized schools in the area immediately. Additionally, the CEM announced the free distribution of land pattas to indigenous tribes under the provisions of ‘The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006,’ commonly known as the Forest Rights Act (FRA). This move aims to secure the land and resource rights of forest-dwelling communities in the constituency.

“The KAAC is dedicated to fulfilling all the memoranda and concerns raised by the public during this interaction. We will work tirelessly to ensure the aspirations of the people under Amreng constituency are met soon,” Dr Ronghang declared, reinforcing his administration’s focus on grassroots development.

The programme saw the presence of prominent dignitaries, including Member of Parliament Amarsing Tisso, MLAs Darsing Ronghang (Howraghat), Bidya Sing Engleng (Diphu), and Rupsing Teron (Baithalangso), as well as former MP Horensing Bey. Various Executive Members (EMs), Members of Autonomous Council (MACs), Board Chairpersons, departmental officials, West Karbi Anglong BJP District President Radip Ronghang, along with district and mandal office bearers, party workers, and other distinguished guests, graced the occasion.

However, the absence of local MAC and Executive Member Rina Terangpi sparked speculation. When questioned by a media person, Dr Ronghang attributed her absence to illness. Yet, some intellectuals and political strategists in Karbi Anglong view this as a deliberate political manoeuvre by the CEM. With the BJP’s vote bank remaining steady and the upcoming assembly elections on the horizon, analysts suggest that the KAAC leadership is strategically engaging with factional groups of leaders and workers loyal to local MACs. This move is perceived as an effort to bolster the party’s grassroots network and expand its worker base.

Rumours also swirled about the possibility of a new face emerging as the MLA candidate for the 111 Number (ST) Rongkhang Assembly constituency (post-delimitation). Political observers anticipate a similar public interaction programme in the Kopili constituency of West Karbi Anglong in the coming days, hinting at a broader strategy to strengthen the BJP’s foothold in the region.

The event underscored the KAAC’s commitment to addressing local issues while highlighting the intricate political dynamics at play as the region gears up for future electoral battles. For the people of Arnam Teplong, the promises made by Dr Ronghang signalled hope for a more developed and connected future.
