BOKAKHAT: Among Assam’s prominent tourist destinations, Kakochang holds a special place. Nestled in the lush green Karbi Anglong district, this natural wonder originates from the Kardaisiriya Hills, where the pristine waters cascade down in an uninterrupted flow, creating the mesmerizing Kakochang Waterfall. Bamboo groves enrich the slopes of the hills, forming a scenic beauty that is both artistic and serene. The indigenous Karbi people, having long resided in bamboo-built houses (chang ghar) in the area, gave the waterfall its name —Kakochang.
Comprising three distinct waterfalls, Kakochang has become a beckoning spot for all. People often yearn to escape the mechanical grind of daily life and immerse themselves in nature. Waterfalls, in particular, offer a sense of divine calm. Watching water tumble from the peaks creates an other-worldly feeling and prompts reflection on life and existence. With its spectacular natural beauty, Kakchang has evolved into a promising hub for tourism.
Since the discovery of Kakochang Waterfall, the number of visitors has steadily increased. Initially, reaching the site was an adventurous challenge, requiring one to trek across treacherous paths and cross water streams like Kakojan. Adventure lovers, however, welcomed the difficulty. But now, the journey has become much more accessible. Government efforts have significantly improved the infrastructure — sturdy bridges now span every water crossing, and roads are paved to allow vehicles to reach the destination with ease.
Additionally, railings have been constructed over the rocks to ensure safe and scenic access to the waterfall, further enhancing the visitor experience. This has led to a growing influx of both domestic and foreign tourists. As a popular destination, Kaziranga National Park already draws international tourists, and tour operators can easily include Kakchang in packaged itineraries alongside Kaziranga.
A large parking area resembling a playground has been set up near Kakchang. Moreover, Kakchang Bazaar introduces visitors to the traditional attire, furniture, and crafts of the local hill communities. Educational tours, picnics, and nature lovers from far and wide now seek to enjoy the pure, green, mountainous environment that Kakochang offers.
A team of women sanitation workers diligently keep the area clean, supported by a group of volunteers ready to help in all matters. Everyone strives to keep the area plastic-free.
