KARBI ANGLONG: After much anticipation, the District Council Court (DCC) at Karbi Anglong was finally inaugurated by the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, on Monday. It has been developed to cater to tribal parties' disputes within the purview of KAAC.
CEM Ronghang talked at the event, stating that construction of the DCC building began in 2005. He remembered former KAAC Executive Member Elwin Teron and former MLA Dr. Dharamsing Teron, who contributed to its initiation. Issues such as adultery, theft, marriage laws, and property will be heard in the court, so justice will now be even more accessible for tribal communities.
Ronghang also said plans have been finalized to constitute a village police force for KAAC, which has also been given its nod by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. "Soon, KAAC will have its own police force," he underscored.
The event was graced by the presence of dignitaries such as KAAC Chairman Raju Tisso, MP Amarsing Tisso, other executive members, and Karbi traditional king Long Ronghang. Speaking on the occasion, MP Amarsing Tisso said that judiciary is one of the four pillars of democracy and that now tribal disputes can be solved locally without approaching higher courts.
Judge Sarthe Ronghi explained that the DCC was constituted under Paragraph 4 of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and the Mikir Hills Autonomous District Administration of Justice Rule, 1954. The court will judge civil cases, including marriage laws, land disputes, and title suits, with criminal cases being subject to the Governor's approval for trials with sentences of more than five years.
The court has additionally appointed Judge Sarthe Ronghi, Additional Judge Dhonison Lekthe, as well as judicial officers Micky Teron and Bilcham Teron for the running of its affairs.
