Assam: Karbi Anglong Police Introduces Innovative 'Time Card' Initiative to Curb Rising Road Accidents

BOKAJAN: In response to the alarming surge in road accidents along the NH-39 passing through Bokajan via Nambor Reserve Forest and a 40-km stretch of NH-36 connecting Nagaland and Manipur, the Superintendent of Police in Karbi Anglong, in collaboration with the District Road Safety Committee, has announced a groundbreaking initiative. Starting on Sunday, a trial period will commence where every vehicle traversing through National Highway 39 between Sarihajan and Silonijan will be issued time cards. The Superintendent of Police emphasized that the speed limit will be strictly enforced at 60 kilometers per hour, with any vehicle reaching the destination ahead of time shall be penalized as per the motor vehicle act.

Highlighting the urgency of this measure, he revealed that in 2023 alone, seventy-nine lives were lost in road accidents within Karbi Anglong district, with a concentration of incidents between Bokajan and Borpathar. The Superintendent attributed these accidents predominantly to high-speed driving.

Furthermore, the authorities will intensify vigilance against drink and drive tendencies, and stricter monitoring of parking on national highways will be implemented. The Superintendent of Police also disclosed specific time frames identified for heightened accident risk during the briefing. This initiative aims not only to regulate speed but also to instill a culture of responsible driving, fostering safer journeys for commuters along this crucial corridor that serves as India’s gateway to South East Asian countries via Myanmar.
