Assam: Kaushik Goswami Appointed as Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court

GUWAHATI: The Central government has officially appointed Senior Advocate Kaushik Goswami as an additional judge of the Gauhati High Court. This development was shared by Union Minister of State with independent charge of the Law and Justice Ministry, Arjun Ram Meghwal, on X (formerly Twitter), and a formal notification was posted on the Union Department of Justice's website.

As per the official notification released on Thursday, Senior Advocate Kaushik Goswami will be serving in this position appointed by the central government- for a tenure of two years from the day he assumes charge of his office.

It is worth noting that the Central government has deferred the processing of Senior Counsel Unni Krishnan Nair's appointment, whose name was also proposed in the same Collegium resolution recommending Senior Advocate Goswami.

The Collegium resolution, published on the Supreme Court's website on October 17, revealed that the Gauhati High Court Collegium recommended both lawyers for judgeship on May 29 this year. The views of constitutional authorities in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland were sought, and consultee judges at the Supreme Court were also consulted to assess their suitability for elevation.

For Senior Advocate Goswami, consultee judges expressed a unanimous positive opinion, and the Department of Justice (DoJ) noted his high professional competence and clean record of integrity.

In the case of Senior Counsel Nair, all four consultee judges provided unanimous positive opinions. Although the DoJ recognized his professional competence, it made an adverse observation. However, the Collegium decided that this should not hinder the recommendation, especially when the government reported no adverse findings regarding his integrity.

As part of this development, while seven judges have been appointed to the Madhya Pradesh High Court, three were appointed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court by the central government. Similarly, two judges were also appointed to the Patna High Court.

It is also worth noting that last month, 11 judicial officers and six advocates were appointed as judges in eight high courts, including Delhi.
