KOKRAJHAR: Surya Baruah, the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of Assam's Kokrajhar district, has been arrested on charges of having assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell made the arrest on Monday after conducting a series of investigations into his financial transactions.

The vigilance cell had previously conducted raids at Baruah's residence and office last month. The search operations took place at his home located in Ananda Nagar, in the Bhangagarh area of Guwahati. Reports indicate that Baruah owns multiple properties throughout the city, raising suspicions about the legitimacy of his wealth.

Following his detention in Kokrajhar, Baruah was brought to Guwahati for further legal action. On his arrival, he was subjected to a medical examination before he was produced at Panbazar Police Station for formalities.

In addition to the raids at his residence, the vigilance team also targeted his office in Dhubri as part of the ongoing investigation. During the searches, officials reportedly recovered a sizable sum of Rs 37 lakh in cash along with a.32 caliber pistol, further spiking the mystery of Baruah's finances.

The case represents a continuing effort by the Assam government to battle corruption and establish responsibility among public servants. The investigation into Surya Baruah's assets is part of a larger initiative to stem financial improprieties within the state's administrative machinery.
