KOKRAJHAR: The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative, launched by the Ministry of Women & Child Development (MWCD), marks a decade of success today. To commemorate this significant milestone, a series of events and programs are being organized at the state, union territory, and district levels to reinforce the scheme’s core objectives of protecting and educating the girl child.
In Kokrajhar, an oath-taking ceremony and signature campaign were held at the District Commissioner’s office in the presence of District Commissioner Masanda M Pertin. The event was also attended by ADC Kabita Deka, Jituraj Gogoi, SDO (C) Gossaigaon Mridul Shivhare, Election Commissioner, PHE, and other key stakeholders who reaffirmed their commitment to the cause.
Over the past ten years, the BBBP scheme has made significant contributions towards curbing gender-biased sex selection practices and promoting the education and well-being of girls across the country. The district-level celebrations, starting today will continue till March8, bringing together women from various fields, including politics, government and private sectors, armed forces, police, civil services, sports, art and culture, healthcare, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), ‘Drone Didis,’ Anganwadi Workers (AWW), Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA), and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM), among others. Their presence will inspire and encourage the community to actively support the mission of BBBP.
During the celebration period, a series of weekly activities will be launched through SANKALP: Hub for Empowerment of Women, focusing on capacity-building and awareness campaigns. Key initiatives planned include educational programs and publicity drives to promote helpline services such as Women Helpline (WHL-181) and Child Helpline (CHL-1098). Special attention will be given to raising awareness about menstrual hygiene through educational sessions and the distribution of sanitary pads. The programme will also include gender sensitization initiatives aimed at boys and men to foster a culture of gender equality within the community.
Several community engagement activities are also planned as part of the celebrations. These include plantation drives in collaboration with the Forest Department and District Administration, as well as bike and cycle rallies led by women police personnel to promote the importance of girl child education and safety. Enrolment drives will be conducted to encourage increased participation of girls in schools, while awareness and enrolment initiatives under the Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 scheme will be carried out with a special focus on aspirational districts and the North Eastern states. Furthermore, mental health awareness campaigns will be conducted to address the holistic well-being of adolescent girls.
