KARBI ANGLONG: In a significant move, the Karbi Students’ & Youth Council (KSYC) has submitted a memorandum to Atul Bora, Minister of Border Protection and Development, Assam, expressing deep concern over the ongoing Assam-Meghalaya border talks, especially regarding Block I and II.
The student body urged immediate intervention to safeguard Karbi Anglong’s constitutionally and historically demarcated boundary, warning against any compromise that excludes the consent of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and local indigenous communities.
KSYC cited the 1951 Assam Government notification, which clearly places Blocks I and II within the jurisdiction of the then United Mikir Hills (now Karbi Anglong), as a legal foundation for their claim.
The Council called for the dissolution or restructuring of the current Regional Committee, claiming it does not reflect the will of the people. They urged that any future negotiations must involve KAAC and local stakeholders to preserve peace, justice, and indigenous rights.
Meanwhile, the delegation of the Karbi Anglong Dima Hasao Autonomous State Demand Committee (KADHASDCOM) left Diphu to hold a sit-in demonstration on July 29, 2025, at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, to pressurise the Central Government for the immediate implementation of Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution.
“We have been demanding an autonomous state under Article 244(A) for more than forty years. As Parliament is in session, this is the right time to raise our voice in the national capital,” said Ajit Timung, president of KSDC, at the press meet.
