GUWAHATI: The Assam government has implemented a major policy shift: Aadhaar applications would be rejected if the applicant or their family members haven't applied for inclusion in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
This was declared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after a Cabinet meeting. The move was primarily attributed to the concern over infiltration attempts from Bangladesh.
Infiltration from Bangladesh remains an urgent issue for us, stated Sarma while mentioning the latest apprehensions made by the Assam Police, the Tripura Police, and the BSF in the last two months. "It is high time for the strengthening of the Aadhaar mechanism for resolving these issues of security."
The state's General Administration Department has been made the nodal agency for Aadhaar verification to implement the new policy. Now, an additional district commissioner will be the designated official in each district to oversee the process. This measure is aimed at ensuring proper checks at the local level.
Aadhaar verification will be multi-level. Once an application is filed, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will send the application to the state government for verification.
Local circle officers will then check whether the applicant or their family members had applied for inclusion in the NRC. In case no such application for NRC exists, the Aadhaar request will be rejected, and a report will be sent to the central government.
This policy reflects Assam's commitment to managing border security and improving the identification system. By linking Aadhaar applications to NRC inclusion, the state seeks to address unauthorized immigration and strengthen administrative oversight. For residents of Assam, ensuring compliance with NRC processes is now crucial for obtaining Aadhaar.
