Assam Lockdown News: 7-day complete shutdown in Tinsukia from today

Guwahati: The Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia district of Assam has enforced a "strict lockdown" in the areas under the Tinsukia Municipal board and the Makum Municipal board due to the alarming rise in the number of coronavirus cases in the district.

"As instructed by Deputy Commissioner, Tinsukia, I hereby inform you all that the areas covered under the Tinsukia Municipal board and Makum Municipal Board will be under strict lockdown from 6 pm of 5.8.2020 till 6 pm of 11.8.2020 as per COVID 19 norms. However, essential services within the mentioned areas will remain unhindered during this lockdown period", Bhaskarjyoti Bora, the in-charge of the Tinsukia DIPRO informed.

This comes after the number of coronavirus positive cases in the Upper Assam district soared past the 2,000-case mark. As of Tuesday, the number of cases reached 2,229.

Tinsukia has once again decided to go the lockdown route owing to the sharp rise in the coronavirus graph in Assam, where the tally has been increasing at a dramatic rate in the midst of the Government's attempts to relax the lockdown restrictions in consonance with the Centre's directives.

Assam on Tuesday reported its highest single-day spike of 2,886 new COVID-19 cases, taking the state''s tally to 48,161, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated. 6 more patients died in the state within 24 hours, following which the toll rose to 115, he said.

Two deaths each were reported from Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, while two others from Jorhat and Sonitpur, Sarma said.

Most of the new cases were reported from the worst-hit Kamrup (Metro) district where 550 people tested positive, followed by 294 from Kamrup Rural, 213 from Nagaon, and 201 from Dibrugarh.

"In pursuit of our commitment to contain COVID 19 infections in our state, we will continue with massive testing across the state for the next ten days," Sarma said, once again reiterating the Government's focus on ramping up its testing facilities to isolate the virus cases.

There are 14,615 active cases of the virus in the state at present. So far, 33428 have recovered and three migrated out of the Assam.
