Assam: Major Decisions for Development Taken at Cabinet Meeting in Silchar

GUWAHATI: In the first Cabinet meeting at Silchar in Barak valley on Tuesday, several important decisions were taken, paving the way for the development of the state, said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In the first of many announcements by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma following the cabinet meeting, it has been decided to increase the number of Orunudoi beneficiaries by extending the pension policy to Indira Miri and Deen Dayal Upadhyay scheme beneficiaries. CM Sarma stated that the number of Orunudoi beneficiaries is being sought to be increased to 35 lakhs, with number targeted by the end of this year to reach 27 lakhs. The number of total beneficiaries is set to be increased by 10, 57, 546, with a total outlay of Rs 4,000 crores earmarked for the scheme.

The proposal for development of Guwahati city includes construction of three new flyovers- at Downtown hospital traffic point, at Fatasil Cycle factory point and at Kumarpara- Fatasil point. The aim of constructing new flyovers is to eliminate traffic points in the city with heavy traffic. "The objective of the new flyover at Downtown hospital is to eliminate traffic points between Ulubari and Khanapara. A new flyover will also be constructed at the point leading to APSC office on GS Road," CM Sarma added, saying that the projects would be sanctioned within one year.

The CM also announced that 'Bikaxor Babey Prothom Poxok' or first round of development, will be started from December 5 and will continue up to December 18. During this period, the CM said, there will be development projects, mainly related to infrastructure, in Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Golaghat, Jorhat and Dhemaji districts. He announced a Rs 1000 crore development project for Bongaigaon, new projects in nalbari- including a new Medical college and a bridge at Tamulpur. In Golaghat, there will be a new state highway linking the town, a new DC office and a hospital. The Lachit Barphukan memorial, a new stadium, a new DC office and other development projects in this district headquarter at Jorhat were also announced.

A new bridge connecting Majuli to Lakhimpur was also announced, for which the tender process is already done and work will begin soon, CM Sarma said.

The second round of development activities will be taken up from January 5, 2023, it was announced.
