Assam Man Accused Of Stealing Maradona's Watch Gets Bail As Police Fails To File Charge Sheet

Guwahati: Wazid Hussain, who hit the headlines after stealing legendary footballer Diego Maradona's watch, was granted bail as Assam Police failed to file chargesheet against him.

After slapping a bail bond of Rs 15,000 on Tuesday, the Sivasagar Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court released him.

According to reports, Wazid Hussain's lawyer Ramjan Ali asserted that the court gave enough time to submit necessary evidence but police couldn't do so. Moreover, the police also failed to prove that he stole legendary footballer's watch from Dubai.

''Eventually, the statutory period of two months expired but Police failed to prove their point in court with any evidence,'' media reports quoted him as saying.

In December, 2021, the Assam Police had arrested him for allegedly stealing a luxury watch that belonged to late legendary football player Diego Maradona.

He was arrested from his residence based on inputs from the Dubai Police, said the state Director General of Police.

"As informed through a central agency by the Dubai Police, one Wazid Hussain had stolen a limited edition Maradona signed Hublot watch and fled to Assam. Today morning at 4:00 am, we arrested Wazid from his residence in Sibsagar. The limited-edition watch has been recovered from him," DGP had tweeted.

According to the police, Hussian worked as a security guard at a private company in Dubai where Maradona's belongings were stored. In August, he sought permission for coming to India as his father was unwell. Police are investigating if Wazid Hussian has any past criminal record.

Diego Maradona wore two Hublot Big Bang watches during the FIFA World Cup, 2010, when Hublot launched its Maradona Big Bang Chronograph Limited Edition.

"In an act of international cooperation, the Assam Police has coordinated with Dubai Police through the Indian federal LEA to recover a heritage Hublot watch belonging to legendary footballer late Diego Maradona, and arrested one Wazid Hussein. Follow-up lawful action is being taken," Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had tweeted.
