Silchar: On Saturday, a man named Dilwar Hussain, who is allegedly involved in the illegal entry of Bangladeshi immigrants in India, was shot in the leg by Karimganj Police near the India-Bangladesh border in Patharkandi. Hussain is a resident of Dharmanagar in Tripura and has been helping illegal immigrants to enter India for many years.

Hussain confessed to have smuggled over 70 Bangladeshi nationals to India after many Bangladeshi contacts were found in his phone during his arrest at Karimganj Railway Station. According to him, a secret route near Fulkandi, which is under Patharkandi Police Station, is where the crossings would take place.

At the site where Hussain was taken to verify the route by the a joint team of Karimganj and Patharkandi Police, he allegedly attempted to snatch a revolver from a police officer's possession and was shot on his leg in the process. A police officer was also injured in the scuffle and is now getting treated at the Patharkandi hospital along with Hussain. This information was confirmed by the Karimganj SP.

It is believed that Hussain took advantage of the porous border to bring in illegal immigrants and has been engaging in such activities for a long time. It was also revealed during the interrogation that his operations spanned across Assam and Tripura, raising serious concerns of border security.
