GUWAHATI: A man from the Baksa district of Assam was allegedly lynched by a group of villagers for stealing mustard seeds.

The person killed in the act has been identified as Sanjay Das.

As per reports, a group of the villagers tracked the accused on suspicion of him being involved in mustard seeds theft.

Further on finding him, they started to beat him leaving him unconscious.

He was left there by the villagers after he fell unconscious. Meanwhile, the police on Thursday found his dead body in a drain in the area.

On further investigation, the entire incident came to light and seven persons including the headman of the village were arrested by the police.

Earlier, a 50-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of villagers on suspicion of practising witchcraft in lower Assam's Baksa district along the Indo-Bhutan border on Monday.

Police said around 200 villagers on Monday held a Kangaroo court and accused Biren Boro of practising witchcraft. A group of villagers subsequently started to beat him black and blue.

The villagers also allegedly attacked the police team when it tried to rescue the victim. At least five policemen were injured in the attack.
