Guwahati: A man tried to commit suicide by jumping off a ferry into the Brahmaputra river in the wee hours of Tuesday.

As per media reports, the incident unraveled when the ferry was travelling to Kamalabari from Nimati Ghat.

However, his attempt was thwarted as the people, who were present on the boat, saved him.

The man has been identified as Saru Dutta and he hails from Gormukh in Majuli.

The information regarding the incident was immediately conveyed to the police right after he was saved.

Thereafter, the police came and took him along with them so as to prevent him from committing any such actions in the future.

Saru even made an attempt to break free from the hold of the police but his attempt went in vain as he could not manage to escape and instead ended up getting detained. Subsequently, he was sent to avail of medical attention.

The reason behind his alleged attempt to suicide is yet to be ascertained.

The total number of suicide incidents in Assam during the year 2021 stands at 3,095.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma put across this figure in the state assembly, while he was responding to a query put forward by BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia during the question hour.

The Assam CM also went on add that the number of suicides had decreased from 2020, when 3,243 such incidents were registered.

It is to be noted that a total of 1,53,052 suicides were reported in the country during 2020 showing an increase of 10 percent in comparison to 2019 and the rate of suicides has increased by 8.7 percent during 2020 over 2019.
