Assam: Massive Consignment of Narcotics Seized in Karimganj

KARIMGANJ: A joint operation was carried out by the Special Task Force and the Karimganj Police on Tuesday, 9 January 2024. A massive consignment of contraband narcotics was seized during this operation, the value of which is expected to go in thousands of crores of rupees if not in hundreds. A statement issued from the police side mentioned that this could probably be the largest consignment of narcotics seized in the Northeast Indian Region, in terms of the value of the contraband materials in the market.

A joint team of police personnel from the Special Task Force of Assam Police led by DIG Parthasarathi Mahanta and Karimganj Police under Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das undertook an operation against narcotic substances at in the Karimganj district of the state. The operation was carried out at Suprakandi which falls under the Nilam Bazar Police Station at arround 2:15 PM on Tuesday.

The police officials were able to seize a total of 5.1 kilos of heroin and 64,000 Yaba tablets. Four packets of foreign cigarettes were also seized. The vehicle used by the suspects was also seized during the operation. It was mentioned to be a Maruti Suzuki S Presso vehicle bearing registration number MZ 06 A 1422.

The joint team also arrested four people in connection to the development. They are Nur Ahmed from Patharkandi in Karimhanj, who was the driver of the vehicle. The rest of the people named Zosangliani, Ramngheaka and Lalchamliana all belong to Thenzwl in Mizoram.

The statement also mentioned that the prices of these contraband narcotics have gone up recently due to the continuous and effective operations and aggressive actions by Assam Police against everyone found in connection to such materials across the state of Assam.
