DHUBRI: A huge blaze broke out early this morning, April 13th, at an ice cream manufacturing unit in Sapotgram Bazar, Dhubri, resulting in widespread destruction and panic among the locals. The fire is said to have been caused by a lightning strike as a heavy thunderstorm pounded the region.
Witnesses narrated how the fire suddenly became more intense, rapidly spreading to surrounding commercial structures and burning an estimated six to seven shops. Two pharmacies, a jewelry store, a footwear shop, and other small enterprises owned by local businesspeople were among the affected ones. Witnesses said the scene was chaotic as citizens struggled to rescue their goods as the shops were torched.
"It was so quick. One moment there was a big thunder, and the next, the factory caught fire," said a local shopkeeper, still shaken by the experience.
The fire services were quick to act, deploying sixteen to eighteen fire trucks from Gosaigaon, Kokrajhar, Bilasipara, Dhubri, and the surrounding areas. The firefighters battled the fire for several hours before they managed to bring the situation under control.
Preliminary calculations indicate that the total loss of property may run more than fifty lakh rupees. There has not been any report of casualties, although officials are still surveying the damage. An inquiry into the cause of the fire is on, with a detailed report due in a few days.
