Assam: Massive Seizure of Cough Syrup Bottles on Guwahati Train; 3 Smugglers Arrested

GUWAHATI: In a significant operation, security forces have successfully confiscated a substantial quantity of cough syrup bottles from a train at Azara Railway station in Guwahati. The operation, carried out by the Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), resulted in the seizure of approximately 900 bottles of cough syrup from the Tripura Sundari Express. This accomplishment comes as a result of vigilant efforts to combat illegal activities.

The three individuals apprehended in connection with the seizure are Ashish Kumar, Bikash Ranjan, and Akash Kumar, all suspected of being involved in smuggling. The confiscated cough syrup bottles, valued at around Rs 1 lakh and 57 thousand, were allegedly en route from Bihar to Agartala. However, the smuggling attempt was thwarted by the quick response of security forces in Guwahati.

This incident follows another recent drug-related seizure in the region. Notably, authorities seized a staggering 61,000 banned cough syrup bottles worth approximately Rs. 4 crore from a truck in the Karimganj district of Assam. The Karimganj police intercepted the truck in the Churaibari area, situated along the Assam-Tripura border. The driver of the truck, identified as Biswajit Biswas, was apprehended in connection with the massive seizure.

Pratap Das, the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), provided insights into the ongoing efforts against drug-related activities. The operation to intercept the truck was part of a broader initiative to curb the illegal drug trade. The confiscated cough syrup bottles, valued at an estimated Rs 4 crore, underscore the scale of the illegal trade and the challenges posed by such activities.

Pratap Das said, “Our operation against drugs is going on. Last night, we intercepted a truck. We have recovered and seized 61,000 banned cough syrup bottles from the truck. We also apprehended the driver of the truck. The market value of the seized cough syrup bottles is estimated at around Rs 4 crore.”

In summary, the security forces' successful intervention at the Azara Railway station in Guwahati has resulted in the seizure of a considerable quantity of cough syrup bottles and the apprehension of three suspected smugglers. This operation is indicative of the concerted efforts to combat illegal activities, particularly drug smuggling. The incident also draws attention to the broader challenges posed by such unlawful practices and the ongoing measures to address them effectively.
