KOLKATA: In a significant breakthrough, a fraudster accused of orchestrating a multi-crore online trading scam along with his brother has been arrested by the Sribhumi police in collaboration with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The apprehended individuals have been identified as Md. Shakir, the mastermind behind this massive scam along with his brother Md. Jabir.

The absconding culprits were nabbed in Mukundapur under the Purva Jadavpur Police Station in Kolkata, West Bengal after months of going into hiding. The arrested duo were transported back to Badarpur in Assam on Thursday morning.

Under the guise of an online trader, Shakir was reportedly the kingpin of one of the largest trading scams in Assam's Barak Valley. His modus operandi involved duping thousands of investors by promising high returns.

He operated his fraudulent activities from Sribhumi district in Assam and allegedly lured his victims into investing huge sums of money in his scheme before disappearing. As per reports, Shakir took hundreds of crores from unsuspecting victims in the name of investment before going underground.

Earlier on 10 September, 2024, a lookout notice was issued against him and his associates. The whereabouts of the scamster could not be traced despite a case being registered by the CBI which had been actively pursuing his capture.

A fresh investigation had been launched by the Sribhumi police earlier this month, leading to their capture and legal formalities are currently underway.
