BHUBANESWAR: A heartbreaking incident unfolded at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar as a second-year MBBS student, Ratnesh Kumar Mishra, reportedly ended his life. Police reports stated that they discovered the 21-year-old student, originally from Dibrugarh, Assam, hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room on Wednesday.

Preliminary investigations suggest that financial hardships faced by his family might have contributed to this tragic decision. Before taking this extreme step, Mishra reportedly sent an emotional audio message to his younger brother.

Mishra had recently returned to the campus on Tuesday following a 10-day vacation at home. His father had accompanied him back to Bhubaneswar and was staying at a nearby hotel. According to his father, he last spoke with Mishra in the morning. However, when subsequent attempts to reach him on his mobile phone failed, he rushed to the hostel.

Upon finding the room locked from the inside and receiving no response despite repeated knocking, Mishra’s father, with the assistance of other students, forced the door open. Tragically, they discovered Mishra’s lifeless body. The young man was immediately taken to the hospital’s emergency room, where he was pronounced dead.

AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Director Ashutosh Biswas later visited the hostel to review the situation. A case of unnatural death has been registered at the Khandagiri police station, and an investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss.
