Guwahati: The combined provisional merit list for undergraduate students have been announced by Cotton University on September 22. The cut-off marks for B.A. and B.Sc (Honours) programmes are expected to be very high this year owing to the performance of the students of CBSE and state boards.

The total number of seats in the university in all courses have been raised by 25% keeping in view the high pass percentage of this year's board examination.

According to sources, the cut-off marks is unlikely to be abnormally high even though a large number of students of the incoming batch have scored unusually high scores.

A source in CU said, "Last year while preparing the merit lists, performance in the best three subjects was considered. But this year, the best four, plus English marks are being considered. Assessing performance in three subjects would have resulted in skyrocketing cut-offs."

Previously, the merit list was prepared by applying a statistical formula to standardize the marks of the applicants, irrespective of the boards. However, this formula will not be applied this year.

Also, the newly added 25% seats will be reserved for the students who have passed out from Assam Higher Secondary Education Council. However, the major percentage f seats will be available to the students of other boards.

The top score in the merit list of B.Sc (honours) is 490, while the top score of B.A. (honours), with the exception of Mass Communication & Journalism, is 495.

The university has also notified that the current merit lists are only draft lists. The final unreserved and quota-wise list would be published after correction of errors or updation of data reported by the candidates.
