DIBRUGARH: As part of the government's overall flood management plan, State Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika unveiled an ambitious plan on Thursday to rejuvenate natural water bodies and build artificial reservoirs in the Dibrugarh area. The effort was launched in response to the district's ongoing flood problems during monsoon seasons.

It is expected that the planned system of man-made and natural reservoirs will serve as an essential buffer system, assisting in controlling water levels and lessening the effects of intense rains on cities.

While inspecting regions of Dibrugarh impacted by erosion and flooding on Thursday, Hazarika remarked, "Our primary focus is on cleaning and restoring existing water bodies to enhance their capacity as natural reservoirs during the monsoon season. Additionally, we will create new artificial water bodies through strategic excavation to further strengthen our flood control infrastructure."

The minister carried out a thorough evaluation of the regions impacted by erosion and flooding with the help of Assam Tourism Development Corporation Chairman Rituparna Baruah, Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, and Lahowal MLA Binod Hazarika.

"Multiple projects are currently underway in Dibrugarh district specifically targeting flood and erosion control. We are working tirelessly towards our goal of making Dibrugarh flood-free and significant progress has already been made in this direction," Hazarika added.

Prasanta Phukan, a local MLA, expressed hope for the project's eventual implications. He remarked, "This innovative approach of utilising natural water bodies, combined with new artificial reservoirs, could be a game-changer for our flood management efforts."
