SILCHAR: A reprehensible incident took place at Silchar on the 29th of October 2022, where an Islamic cleric raped a minor girl when she went for a her regular religious studies.

The man who raped the minor girl was a 43 year old Islamic religious cleric from Silchar and was arrested for the crime by the police on the next day. According to the police, the mother filed the complaint a day after the episode took place. She narrated the entire story to the police saying that her daughter was sent for her religious studies just like every other people does in the Islamic community.

'' After our daughter got back home we noticed her behaving in an unusual manner. She looked traumatized and scared. She told us that the Maulavi touched her in inappropriate ways and also threatened her '' added the victim's mother.

The cleric also tried to escape after knowing about the complaint filed against him but couldn't dodge the law and was found in the Kanakpur area of Silchar. He was later on taken into custody, stated the police.

The case was registered under section 447, 376 AB and 354 of the Indian penal code.

Recently a 30 year old women was assaulted and killed by a youth named Libu Sinha from Silchar. This incident stunned the people, resulting in a candlelight march in Patharkandi of Karimganj district. Hundreds of people including women came out for this protest for justice.This too, happened in 2022 at Silchar.

Unfortunately, sexual assaults against women have always been a part of the society since the very beginning. This year a total of 432 rape cases have been registered in India according to the census and Assam records the highest rate of crime against women, says the National Crime Reports Bureau (NCRB). This has happened for the 5th time consecutively.
