SILCHAR: Two incidents of moral policing made headlines, sparking strong resentment and concern for mob justice in Assam's Silchar.
It includes a Manipur policeman who was attacked by the public for suspected illegal immigration, and a mentally unstable person getting brutally beaten up under false accusations of child kidnapping.
The first incident occurred close to the Swami Vivekananda statue at Chadarghat, when Qayyum Ahmed Khan, an officer of the police department at Imphal, was attacked by 7-8 men who falsely accused him of being a Bangladeshi infiltrator.
A traffic policeman who came to intervene in the assault was overpowered and, despite his attempt, could not stop the attack, while he was rescued only after intervention from the local police.
In another case, a mentally disturbed man was tied to a bridge and mercilessly beaten by a crowd after being falsely accused of attempting to abduct children. Police acted fast, rescuing the man and taking him to the hospital for treatment.
Both incidents have created massive outrage on social media, as it has called for a serious criticism over the rise of mob violence, and failure of local authorities in preventing such attacks. To date, no one has been arrested after the investigation of both events. These disturbing events bring attention to vigilantism and the troubles law enforcement has in maintaining law and order in the region.
