MORIGAON: As the supply of local fish from the water bodies of the district dwindles, most of the people of Morigaon have been deprived of their consumption. They have been forced to depend on imported fish. It is alleged that some wealthy businessmen purchase the locally produced fish in large numbers and sell them at higher prices outside the state. It is worth mentioning that the pescatarians have been deprived of getting the taste of local fishes due to the same.
More than 22 large water bodies have been producing fish in the district. Moreover, the district has become a fish hub as a section of unemployed youths has been taking up fish farming as their livelihood, due to which the production of fish has risen in the district. It is also alleged that as the supply of locally produced fish is being done outside the state on larger scales gradually, it has led to a scarcity of local fish in the district. This has also led to the rise in their prices.
A section of people complained that they had been depending on imported fish regularly. The people of Morigaon have appealed to the concerned authority to take necessary steps to ensure the availability of local fish in the market.
