He had also climbed Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, Mount Acconogua in 2019, and Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa in 2018.

Guwahti: Hedayat Ali from Assam's Hajo on Thursday became the seventh Assamese to scale Mount Everest.

Ali, who is currently settled in California, climbed the top of Mount Everest at around 7:30 am.

He was part of an international team with 11 other mountaineers.

Prior to this, he had also climbed Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, Mount Acconogua in 2019, and Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa in 2018.

Tarun Saikia was the first Assamese to reach the top of Mount Everest.

At the age of 37, Saikia reached its highest peak on 18 May 2013. The expedition was sponsored by the North Eastern Council and the Manipur Government.

It is beleived that he loved adventure sports since his schooldays and he began mountaineering with an adventure club at Gauhati College in 1989.

Appreciating his effort, the Government of Assam had also announced a cash award of Rs 20 Lakhs for his feat.
