LADAKH: In a significant achievement, two Assam mountaineers, Jayanta Nath and Shekhar Bordoloi, reaching an altitude of 6,365 meters successfully scaled an unnamed peak in Ladakh. They were part of the Assam Mountaineering Association's Triple Peak Expedition team.

This marks a historic first, as it's the first time an expedition from Assam has undertaken an ascent of three virgin peaks above 6,000 meters in the Ladakh Himalayas. Later, two more team members, Bhaskar Barman and Surajit Ronghang, also reached the summit.

A four-member team successfully completed the Kyagar La trekking route, reaching an altitude of 5,600 meters. The Directorate of Sports & Youth Welfare, Government of Assam, sponsored the 19-member expedition.

The team proposed naming one of the peaks "Lachit Kangri" in tribute to Mahabeer Lachit Borphukan, a legendary military commander from Assam. If approved, it would be the first instance of a Himalayan peak being named after a historical figure from the state.

Meanwhile, Tezpur University took a significant step towards honoring the legacy of Ahom General Lachit Borphukan by inaugurating a state-of-the-art 500-capacity boys’ hostel named after the legendary warrior. The inauguration ceremony also marked the opening of the university’s School of Legal Studies, a milestone in advancing legal education in the region.
