SIVASAGAR: Tensions escalated in the Ranghar Chariali Dhuliapara area of Sivasagar district in Assam following the untimely death of a young woman identified as Mousumi Sultana. Her family and locals have brought serious allegations against her husband, Sahil Hazarika, and mother-in-law, Eliza Begum, for brutally beating her to death, which they had attempted to pass off as an accident.
Mousumi's sister recounted a troubling series of events leading up to her death. She stated, “There was a fight at home, and her husband called our mother, asking her to take Mousumi back, saying they no longer wanted her. In the background, Mousumi could be heard crying, 'Take me home, they beat me so much.' Shortly after, her mother-in-law called again, claiming Mousumi had fallen from her scooty and died.”
According to local sources, Mousumi had endured frequent domestic violence since her marriage two years ago. On the day of the incident, she was reportedly subjected to severe physical abuse at her in-laws' home. Witnesses allege that her body was then placed on the road to make her injuries appear as if they resulted from a road accident.
Mousumi was transported to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The victim's family is now calling for a comprehensive investigation, asserting that this incident is a clear case of murder disguised as an accident.
