GOLAGHAT:  North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) celebrated the International Tea Day in collaboration with Golaghat Commerce College (Autonomous) on Thursday. An interactive meet between NETA members and students was held in presence of faculty members at the college campus in Golaghat. ‘Tea for Better Lives’ was the theme for this year’s International Tea Day as announced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

NETA chairman, Ajay Dhandharia, in his speech said that International Tea Day is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural heritage, health benefits, and economic importance of tea, while working to make its production sustainable ‘from field to cup’ ensuring its benefits for people, cultures, and the environment continue for generations. He highlighted the origin of tea and emphasised on the contribution this 200-year-old industry has made over this journey towards the socio-economic structure of Assam. He also highlighted the health benefits of drinking tea with numerous references and scientific evidence. He concluded his speech with the slogan ‘Sip Tea and Savour Life’.

“India despite being the largest producer and largest consumer of black tea in the world, the per capita consumption however is relatively low compared to many other tea consuming countries. Therefore, our effort is to attract Gen Z (born between 1997 and 2012) towards drinking tea,” said Dhandharia. Keeping that in mind, NETA organized the event at a college campus where a large number of students participated. To make it interesting, a quiz competition for students and an extempore speech competition for faculty members was held which was moderated by Director of NETA Tea Academy Manoj Jallan.

Principal of the college Dr Utpal Sarma appreciated NETA for celebrating the International Tea Day with college students with an aim to create awareness amongst the youth regarding tea drinking and its health benefits.

The celebrations ended with a cake-cutting ceremony by the Principal and Vice-Principal of the College. The event was moderated by Dr Manas Pratim Sarma.

NETA has been running a Post Graduate Diploma course in Tea Management in collaboration with the Golaghat Commerce College since 2016 and this is the 10th year of successful completion. During the event, faculty member Ranjit Mazumdar spoke about the 100 percent placement of all the students who have passed out from the course till date.
