MANGALDAI: The Darrang Police have apprehended Mahibul Islam, president of the Anti-Corruption and Social Welfare Foundation of Bodoland – a non-government organization – for allegedly collecting large sums of money under the guise of influencing senior police officials. This was supposedly done to protect an arrested government medical officer accused of sexually abusing a minor girl patient.

Acting on a tip-off, the police gathered evidence of Islam’s fraudulent activities and detained him on Monday evening for questioning. Further investigation revealed that Islam had also taken substantial amounts of money from two teachers, promising to facilitate their transfers to desired locations. Additionally, he allegedly extorted a significant sum from a contractor, assuring him that he could expedite pending bill payments in the BTC Secretariat.

Mahibul Islam, a resident of Jhargaon in Udalguri district’s Ranipukhuri area, has been arrested in connection with Mangaldai PS Case No. 63/2025 under Sections 316(2)/318(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Upon his production before the judicial court in Mangaldai this evening, the court remanded him to judicial custody at the Mangaldai District Jail. Notably, Islam is reportedly associated with the Minority Front of the UPPL.
