GUWAHATI: On Wednesday, a special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Guwahati sentenced Bodo insurgent Rabi Basumatary to life in jail for indiscriminately shooting at villagers in Assam in 2014.

In multiple cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the India Criminal Code, Basumatary received a harsh 10-year prison sentence.

He was found guilty on March 13 and has since been given two life sentences and two harsh sentences in accordance with Sections 302, 307, and 34 of the IPC as well as Articles 16 (1) (a) and 20 of the UA (P) Act, 1967.

It is important to note that on May 1, 2014, the top NDFB leadership, led by G. Bidai and Songbijit, ordered six other National Democratic Front Boroland (NDFB) cadre to enter Balapara village in the Gosaigaon Police Station area of the Kokrajhar district of Assam and open fire indiscriminately on the villagers.

In this regard, the matter was subsequently recorded as a Special Case in 2015 by the special NIA court.

Two people were sentenced to life in jail on Monday by a sessions court in Imphal for kidnapping and murdering the eight-year-old daughter of the then-Manipur minister Ngajokpa in 2003, according to officials.

On December 28, 2007, the CBI filed a charge sheet against Letkhosei Haokip, Ningombam Rome Meitei, and two others. Meitei and Haokip were given life sentences by the Session Court in Imphal (East).

According to officials, the other two defendants named in the charge sheet passed away during the trial.

On March 29, 2004, the Manipur government requested that the CBI take up the investigation into the matter. The matter was previously looked into by the local police for possible unidentified offenders.

According to a CBI spokeswoman, Miss Lungnila Elizabeth (aged 8 years), daughter of Francis Ngajokpa, then minister in the Government of Manipur, was allegedly abducted on November 4, 2003, from a school in the Sangaiprou, Imphal West district.

He said that on November 12, 2003, the girl's body was discovered in a gunny bag in a ditch near Tera Sadokpam Leikai in the Imphal West district.
