Assam: ‘Nijor Din’ celebrated by Bokakhat Purti Xahitya Xabha

BOKAKHAT: The Bokakhat Purti Xahitya Xabha, in collaboration with the residents of Borbheta village, celebrated ‘Nijor Din,’ an initiative of the Axam Xahitya Xabha, on the first day of Bohag. The event was held at the premises of the Borbheta Village Peripheral Development Committee. The purpose of the celebration was explained by Namita Bora, Secretary of the Purti Xahitya Xabha. The event was organized by Namita Bora and former secretary Gitanjali Kalita.

The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Lakhi Hazarika. More than 20 elderly members of the village were honoured with traditional Bihu offerings.

Advisors, current and former presidents of the Purti Xahitya Xabha, and a few notable local personalities were also felicitated with traditional Assamese gamochas and received Bihu offerings. Gitanjali Kalita performed a prayer song as part of the programme.

In connection with ‘Nijor Din’ and the celebration of Bihu, speeches were delivered by former presidents Manoranjan Sen, Kalpana Chetia, Surendra Nath Gogoi, current President Gopikananda Saikia, Vice-President Dilip Saikia, President of Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samiti Subarna Saikia Bordoloi, President of Assam State Journalists’ Association Jitu Sharma Bajkhowa, and Anichur Rahman, former president and chief advisor of the Bokakhat branch of Assam Senior Citizens’ Association. Villagers Dharmeswar Kurmi and Prafulla Hazarika also spoke on the occasion.

The event featured devotional songs and Bihu performances by local groups. A special farewell felicitation was given to Shankar Karmakar, the recently retired headmaster of Borbheta Primary School.

Also present at the event were former president of the Purti Xahitya Xabha Nijora Barthakur, retired professor Reena Saikia, co-editors of Bokakhat Sandhani Lekhika Samaroh Samiti Chandraprabha Saikia Deka and Shanti Dutta Bordoloi, life member Sumitra Hazarika, executive members Asim Bora, Padmakesav Chetri, and several office-bearers, executive and life members, general members of the Xabha, and distinguished guests.

At the end, Xabha, President Gopikananda Saikia and Secretary Namita Bora expressed their heartfelt thanks to all attendees and the people of Borbheta village for making the event a success.
