GUWAHATI: A group of nine teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17 were apprehended by police after their Instagram video of a risky automobile stunt on NH-15 in Assam's Dhemaji district on Tuesday went viral.

The district transportation officers assessed them a 37,000-rupee fine. The teens have been charged under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 with "disobedience of orders of authorities," "racing and trails of speed," and "driving dangerously," according to Dhemaji District Transport Officer Angikar Buragohain.

He further stated that the offence of underage driving would also be dealt with appropriately upon the production of the driver's name and evidence of age. He continued by saying that one Banamali Saikia, whose son was among the group, has been recognised as the car's owner.

According to K Bhuyan, the in-charge of the Sisiborgaon Police outpost, the car owner's son and his friends took the car without Saikia's permission and drove it through NH-15 towards the Bogibeel Bridge to take Instagram videos.

"They performed the act near Kulajan, which is around 15 kilometres from the Bogibeel Bridge. Several onlookers captured their stunt on camera and posted it to social media. When the video was discovered, police acted swiftly and located the youths on Wednesday," he added.

He said that the teenagers were apprehended by the police on Wednesday and freed after receiving guarantees from their parents that they wouldn't engage in any actions that endangered both their lives and the lives of others on the road. The DTO is presently investigating the MV Act violation case. Since the youths were minors, neither the police nor the DTO have released their names.
