GUWAHATI: Tea city of India, Assam is going to have its first tea Museum opening in Dibrugarh and will be officially opened by 2023.

Assam Tourism Development Corporation Limited (AITDC) chairman Rituparna Baruah speaking to the media said that 90 per cent of the work on the project's first phase has been already finished. The North East Council (NEC) and the Assam government have approved a budget of Rs 3.14 crore for the project's first phase.

The state tourist department authorized a proposal to build a tea museum in Dibrugarh in 2016, and work on the mammoth project began in early 2017. The NEC has authorized Rs 40 crore budgets for the project's second phase on a priority basis.

"The establishment of a tea museum in Dibrugarh dubbed the "Tea City of India," has long been a popular desire of Assam people. This will be the first tea museum in the northeast region, and we want to open it to the public in the first half of 2023. The museum is expected to be a key tourist attraction for both international and local visitors, boosting Assam's tea tourism. The history of tea will be relived for visitors. We all know that tea originated in upper Assam and was introduced by the British" he added.

Recently Premium quality orthodox tea from a tea estate in Dibrugarh was auctioned at Rs 99,999 per kg in the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), setting a new record.

The Manohari gold tea from Dibrugarh was sold to Saurav Tea Traders with the highest bid of Rs 99,999 per kilogram at the GTAC, breaking its own record. At the GTAC last year, the same was auctioned for Rs 75,000 per kilogram, the highest price of the year.
